Al-Qaeda claims suicide bombing in Algeria’s east

Al-Qaeda’s branch in North Africa has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing against security forces in Algeria’s eastern Kabylie region, the SITE monitoring group said.

Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) claimed in a website posting that Sunday’s attack on a security barracks at a village near the city of Tizi Ouzou had killed and wounded at least 36 people, SITE reported on Wednesday.

Algerian repatriation concerns U.N.

A decision to close the Guantanamo Bay prison is admirable, though the forced repatriation of an Algerian is a concern, U.N. representatives said.

Algerian Aziz Abdul Naji failed last week to convince the U.S. Supreme Court that he should be allowed to stay at the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay. He said he would be tortured or killed by militants or government forces in Algeria if he was repatriated.

Mali opens border to Algerian pursuit of al Qaeda

Mali has invited Algerian forces to pursue into its territory al Qaeda insurgents sought for the killing of 11 Algerian paramilitary police, a military source in the West African state said on Thursday.

While Algeria is unlikely to take up the offer it could be a sign of growing readiness among Saharan states to cooperate in the fight against militants in a thinly-policed desert zone which experts say al Qaeda wants to use as a new battleground.
